RIP: Joe Ranft (1960-2005)

I join the animation world in remembering our late colleague, artist and story master Joe Ranft. His untimely passing at age 45 from an auto accident was announced today to a stunned crew at Pixar Studios in Emeryville.

I did not have the honor of working or even meeting him but I do know a lot of people who have, including my brother Ron who has benefited tremendously from his talent, experience and kindness. By all indications, he was well loved and truly understood what it meant to be an artist.

It's comforting to know that Joe's essence, wisdom and philosophies will be handed down to future craftsmen of the industry through the people who where fortunate to have worked closely with him. It is a legacy that I know his family and friends will appreciate and for Joe himself to be truly proud of. (photo courtesy of Luxo)
