As they say, big things come in small packages. Today's super*MARKET comics extravaganza at Meltdown Comics in Hollywood was just that. It was fun hanging out with some old convention friends, other self-publishers and colleagues in animation. There where even some faces I hadn't seen in a while.
I've mentioned in the past how I love small venues like this. (I am a big fan of the Alternative Press Expo in San Francisco) It really gives everyone a chance to talk and feel comfortable without feeling like visitors in a zoo. I try and spend time and chat with everyone so smaller gigs like this are ideal. And of course, seeing amazing work by talented artists really gets my blood pumping. Now I feel energized and inspired ready to draw and complete my latest projects. Just what I need headed to Comic-Con 2008.
Many thanks to Jessica Gao and Gaston D.L. for the invite and to all who stopped by to purchase books and art. Your continued support is greatly appreciated.
Here's a rundown of the fine folk who stopped by my little corner today:
Animation historian/ Cartoon Brew master Jerry Beck
Artist/Director David "Mucci" Fassett
Designer extraordinaire Sean "Cheeks" Galloway
El Muerto creator/artist Javier Hernandez
El Gato Crime Mangler creator/artist Michael Aushenker
Crying Macho Man creator/artist Jose Cabrera
Fuzz and Pluck creator/artist Ted Stearn
Storyboarder Sherm Cohen
Bookseller Stuart Ng
Mighty co-creator Erik Weise
Writer Jessica Chaffin
Storyboarder Rudi Berden
Artists John and Leigh Fountain
Robot Publishing head honcho Rob Goodin
Hot Mexican Love Comics' Ira Sherak
Hot Mexican Love Comics' Larry Reynosa
Ni Hao Kai Lan creator Karen Chau
I did a less than stellar job with the picture taking today but it was a short gig so time was a factor.

Hey Louie. Great set up at your table. Are those Mahfood paintings on the wall? The event looks and sounds like a small con but there's such a great list of talented artist that I will definitely make an effort to check this out next time around. Did time allow you do any Modbook sketches?
Gerald,
That mural is by Mahfood and a bunch of other cats. The photos don't do it justice really. It was a nice afternoon and a special gig since this kind of stuff doesn't happen too often in L.A.
I was originally planning to bring my Modbook but hesitated since it was a short show and I didn't want the Modbook to be a disctraction and dominate the overall conversation. Although a few people did ask me if I brought it...
I agree so much! Small cons are so much nicer then those big ones you get...the small ones are friendlier and more about hanging out with fellow artists and talking, rather then just buying and promoting! I'm lucky really, since I live in the UK, small conventions out weigh the one big convention we have in London :)
*drool* all these comics look great, I really need to get on the task and buy your comics...it seems like US comic cons have more quality control compared to UK ones!
Theorah,
Connecting with fellow artists is the one thing I enjoy at cons and the smaller it is, the better for conversing. At the same token, i'd love to visit the UK and go to your local cons!
I don't really know if the "quality control" over here is any better than where you are. Besides, art is supposed to be subjective anyway right? What seems odd looking to someone is gold to another? But if you make it down here and I to the UK, perhaps we can compare notes!
