Shortly after the release of THE MATRIX in 1999, The Wachowski brothers commissioned a group of top japanese artists and animators to create and produce nine original short films based on the film for a special OVA. (original video animation)
The ANIMATRIX demonstrated once again why the japanese are light years ahead of their north-american counterparts in terms of vision and progressing animation. Here they pushed the boundaries and showed what can be achieved when combining traditional and CG animation.
One of the segments titled "BEYOND" was directed by accomplished animator and illustrator KOJI MORIMOTO whose credits include ROBOT CARNIVAL and the now classic anime AKIRA. He is also the co-founder of STUDIO 4C which produced projects like MEMORIES, SPRIGGAN and parts of TEKKON KINKREET.
Morimoto-san also published the stunning sketchbook called ORANGE which showcases his skills as a designer and illustrator. I consider this book a must have in anyone's collection and one to study in terms of design sense, graphics and color.
The following images are from BEYOND and demonstrates Morimoto's innate sense of cinema, composition and draftsmanship. Just great images to look at and derive inspiration from.

The Animatrix is available on DVD and as a download via iTunes . Portions of BEYOND can also be viewed via YouTube.

I know whatcha mean Louie. That DVD is amazing. The "Beyond" episode truly had fantastic comps, angles and Breath-taking colors. "World Record" was just as amazing. That character designer did a impressive job. I can't get enough of the final race scene and the extended zoom out shot into the green & black crowd! I know what I'm watching this weekend, thanks!
Gerald,
Animatrix is just pure eye candy. I think "Renaissance parts 1 and 2" are some of the best visuals/animation i've seen. It's also dark and unnerving to see the rise of "the machines" and how they take over. I keep telling people who haven't seen the Matrix to actually watch Renaissance first because it sets up the movie quite well.
I had the extreme fortitude to work with 2 amazingly talented artists previously from Beyond C, Ando Hiroaki, who was co-director of Tekkon Kinkreet, and Yamaura Akiyo, my compositing chief on Freedom. Both of them worked on Morimoto's mindblowing short fim Noiseman Soundinsect. Simply been in their presence is great inspiration indeed. You are also right about the book Orange, its a must have ! I also recommend Cannabis Works by the artist Tanaka Tatsuyuki, but you already know that. :]
Yonghow,
You are indeed very lucky! Thanks for the insight. Noiseman is an amazing short which unfortunately is not available in North America (that I know of). Parts of it are on YouTube I believe...
Yes, Cannabis is AS good as Orange in my opinion. Tanaka Tatsuyuki is one amazing talent!!
Just saw the first disc of "Freedom". It was fun and amazing! I could now believe there was only 1 episode on the disc? I'll have to rent the rest.
