Hard Eight Sketch

Late last night I was doing some last minute surfing on my Modbook while flipping channels on television and happened on the classic P.T. Anderson movie HARD EIGHT. Philip Baker Hall is one of my favorite actors and he is especially good in this one. (Probably his best performance to date)

I paused my DVR just as he struck this pose, lighting a cigarette late in the film just as he is about to meet the character played by Samuel L. Jackson. It's kind of noir-ish and really dramatic and inspired me to do a quick painting. (Well, it took about an hour so it's not so quick)

Consequently, "Tivo Sketcthing" as I call it is a great way to do costumed gesture drawing if you can't do it in class. Just pause and draw. Talk about making technology work for you.....

First off, thanks a bunch for the brush settings. Played around with it and liked the feel of it! You tried painter x? This piece is nicely done, the lighting on his face is on point and the pose is a nice choice! I'm practicing drawing female faces and was wondering if you can post some quick doodles of eyes..? 3/4 and front view? Plz.. Thanks for posting this!

Amazing pose - I haven't seen the film, but I'm gonna! I'll definitely give the DVR pause a try.

Your sketches are always so light and airy - like a 2H pencil. Love it! Did you get to talk to Paul Lee at the Axiotron booth and see his pencil set up on ArtRage? I'd email you his link, but I can't find his website :(

Great film, great actor- I was lucky enough to see him on the London Stage a few years ago in Mamet's American Buffalo. William H Macy was in it too.

Javier,

Thanks for your comment. If you'd like to email me directly, perhaps we I can be more instructive that way?

Gerald,

Didn't get a chance to talk to Paul Lee (amongst the many things I missed at Macworld) I really should have stayed 2 days instead of one. As far as the lightness of the images, It has a lot to do with the low flow settings on the brush. I do compensate by adjusting levels after I sketch. But I do like this resolution because it looks a lot more natural rather than digital.

Matt,

PBH is the kind of actor that will lend credibility to any role he plays. You're quite lucky to have caught him live on stage! I'm also a fan of David Mamet. I think he writes great dialogue and realistic characters.

Louie That is a great image. Hard Eight is such a lost little film but it is great. My favorite line out of many
