Creative Illustration is one amazing book. Along with my FAMOUS ARTIST COURSE from the 1950's, CI is one of the most important and referenced books in my library. Loomis was an articulate writer and master illustrator who broke down technique into easily understood philosophies.

Loomis has and will continue to inspire many to become not only the best artists they can be, but to share their knowledge with others.

You certainly got a much better bargain for CI than I did. But the book is worth every penny no matter what one pays for it!

Put simply, good drawing fundamentals wherever and however you learn them is the key regardless of the medium. There is no substitute for good draftsmanship and a trained eye especially in the digital age.

Nothing from the past matters anymore!! We have MTV to show us the way!!! And the commercials and the new TV shows!! And the magazines!! They all know what is good!! There is no past! Only now!
All kidding aside, Loomis was one of the great ones back then and he is still relevant today, no matter what any art director tells you.

Great stuff Louie. He was a major influence at the American Academy of Art in Chicago where I went and where he had taught in 30', (way way way before my time!!) but his books were still being used and recommended. I feel fortunate to have bought most of them for a song compared to nowadays prices. I'm glad to see Amazon is selling the paperbacks. Good deal. I picked up Figure Drawing For What It's Worth and an original 1947 Creative Illustration from an old lady in Chicago for $35, after I placed a 'wanted' ad in the Chicago Tribune or something and she answered it. Amazing books!

I agree with you 100% on the philosphy of Loomis.

I was lucky enough to have my mother pass down her copy of Drawing the Head and Hands to me and my brother when we were just little tykes. The Loomis books are a great resource. They've been kicking around the internet for a while, but its good to see that a legit copy of the complete Creative Ilustration will be made available for future art geeks.

Thanks for the info Andy. I splurged a few years ago and bought myself an original copy. Needless to say It's one of my most valued possessions.

The book itself is still as relevant as it was when in was published back in the 40's. Some great instruction and philosophy from the mind of an artistic genius.
